DIY Father’s Day Gift Idea, ” I love Daddy because. . . ”

Father’s Day  is around the corner, but there’s still time to put together this fun and thoughtful gift. This particular one we actually gave to my husband for his birthday a couple of years ago (so no gift spoilers here honey; sorry!)  but I think it makes the perfect Father’s Day present to remind dads of the many reasons they are cherished and important.

I love Daddy because . . .

Photo gift idea

I love Daddy because. . .

Interview your child(ren) for some great answers to the question  ”I love Daddy because. . . ” record the answers on a nice piece of scrapbook paper. A small chalkboard would be super cute, too! If your child is old enough to write the answers him/herself, that would be even better! Take photos of your child holding the different “answers” to the question. (Do not hesitate to bribe your child with a lollipop or piece of chocolate in order to get great pics! ;-) ) You don’t have to be a professional; just capture the natural moments. You could even get some great images from your camera phone!  It can sometimes help to ask your child to think about their dad/the answer they gave to the question while you’re snapping the photos so that you get a more natural expression from them.

There are lots of fun ways you could present these images. Use your favorite photo editing software to create a collage (there are lots of great tutorials out there on how to do this; if you’re using your iPhone, diptic is a super easy collage app.) I chose to have our final image printed and mounted on a ready-to-hang “standout” from mpix, but if I were doing it again I might print on canvas or, my new favorite, have the final image mounted on an eco-friendly wood panel from plywerk (although turn-around time is a bit longer.)  You could also create a photo book (this would be especially great for larger families — a couple of pages for each child) put a photo card together, print the images individually and place them in a frame with multiple openings, present the images in a slideshow for dad . . .  I’m sure there are lots of other great ideas too!

Whatever you decide to do, have fun! And Happy (early) Father’s Day to all the awesome dads out there!

Happy Mother’s Day from [en]frame photography, Scottsdale, Arizona

To all the moms, “like a mom”s and moms-to-be; to the moms I’ve had the honor of photographing and those whose memories are yet to be captured; for the Moms we carry in our hearts; to all of us who have known the love, support, patience and strength that only a mother/mother figure can provide; to those of us that have learned that same patience, strength and love by becoming moms ourselves; and to my own wonderful mom especially, without whose constant love and support I wouldn’t be who I am or able to do what I do . . . Happy Mother’s Day!

Scottsdale, Arizona Family Photography – Multigenerational Photo Session

What an honor to be asked to photograph  this family  – four generations together! Such a blessing for them to have grandparents, great-grandparents, children and grandchildren all together and such a special experience for me to witness and photograph! When I think about what fuels my passion for photography, it is in large part being able to document families and relationships like this and to preserve special memories, moments and connections for a lifetime. Here’s a little peak into their session.

Thank you to this beautiful family for the opportunity! xo

Modern Family Interview Series from Love is Love Photography

My family and I were honored to be asked to participate in this series of Modern Family Interviews by Marcia Stuhler of Love is Love Photography in Dallas, Texas.

Marcia goes into a little more detail in her blog post of how she and I met and the fact that our friendship seemed “meant to be” from the start. We have a lot in common including our mutual passion for documenting the lives and love of ALL families and especially for changing the world and the way the world views and understands Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender families one image at a time. I really appreciate Marcia asking me and my family to be a part of this project and we were happy to support Marcia and her efforts to show that Love and Family comes in all sorts of combinations.

I also really appreciated that Marcia made a point to encourage me to share a variety of pictures with her for this post including ones I take of our family on my iPhone. She really wanted people to understand that documenting your family and precious moments doesn’t always have to be done with a fancy camera or equipment or by a professional and I completely agree. Even us photographers (maybe even ESPECIALLY us photographers) capture a lot of our daily moments with our phones  and some of my most cherished images are ones I shot “on the fly” with my iPhone.

Anyway, click on the heading above for a peak into our family — I hope you enjoy. And please check out Love is Love Photography through the website, blog, Facebook and/or twitter and show my friend Marcia some love. And if you or someone you know would like to be a part of this project, share your story with
Marcia here.

Marcia, I’m so glad we’ve connected and I look forward to where our friendship and our mutual passions will take us in the years to come! xo
