Do you have a train-obsessed kid chugga-chugga-choo-choo-ing around your house? We’ve got a mini-conductor in our house and our train lovin’ kiddo recently transitioned to a “big kid” bedroom which means some of his nursery decor grew up too. Here are some of the accessories we used for his train themed bedroom as well as a round up of some additional train-themed decor for creating the perfect railroad station…uh, i mean train-themed kids bedroom . . . Train Theme Kids’ Bedroom

I love the idea of a room that grows with a child so that while their interests change or their aesthetic matures, you can just change out a few accessories and maybe change the paint color rather than have to redo an entire bedroom. A great way to age-proof a room is with some beautiful art — something a little bit sophisticated (but not TOO sophisticated) and that isn’t too “babyish.” Black and white photographs, vintage prints, cool typography are all examples of art that will grow with your kiddo.

Subway art is another great choice. There are a lot of options for subway art on Etsy but I really love this one from Transit Design because you can customize it to include cities and towns that are special to your family.

Since your train obsessed kiddo no doubt loves playing with trains, why not skip a traditional rug and put a train-themed play rug in instead? They usually come already backed with a non-skid surface so they’re perfect for a kid’s room. My son has one in his room and it’s super cute. He spends lots of time playing with his trains in there and building all sorts of great train tracks. I wasn’t able to track down his exact rug, but there are some good options on Amazon: Train Rugs on Amazon

To store all the trains and tracks in our son’s room we took the drawers from an old train table that we gave away to make some space in (and frankly to help “grow up”) the family room. We put the drawers under the little guy’s bed to store all of his trains, tracks and train accessories. (ps – These SURETRACK CLIPS are a sanity saver for kids who like to build lots of bridges and ramps or when building tracks on an uneven surface; it keeps the tracks from coming apart and has saved us from many meltdowns!)

To make room for the drawers, we put his bed up on small risers to make enough space for the drawers to fit underneath and then hid them with a simple tailored bed skirt. (If you do this, be sure to get a bed skirt with a longer drop to account for the extra inches from the risers.)
