Lately I have been really interested in and empowered by the concept of the Growth Mindset, first researched and written about by Carol Dweck in her book “Mindset: The New Psychology of Success.”
Since Dweck’s research and the rising popularity and understanding of the Growth Mindset concept, many adaptations and applications have been created – for kids and adults; in schools and in businesses, from sports to interpersonal relationships . . . I won’t go into great detail in this post but the basic concept is that a fixed mindset believes that abilities (and therefore outcomes) are fixed while a growth mindset embraces the idea that abilities can be developed especially when we apply effort, grit, and a willingness to make and learn from mistakes.
As I learn about developing a growth mindset, I am reminded of one of my favorite quotes:
“Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly”
Butterflies seem like the perfect symbol for a growth mindset.
Many teachers are embracing the idea of the growth mindset in the classroom and empowering students through the use of the growth mindset concepts. This led me to the idea of creating a set of printables that teachers can use featuring six growth mindset principles with the symbolic imagery of the beautiful butterfly. These images can be printed as posters, handouts, awards, or in any way a teacher sees fit. The watercolor butterflies and coordinating ombre typography would also be beautiful hanging in a child’s bedroom, a playroom or in a homeschool classroom. . . Or anywhere that you can imagine encouraging a growth mindset.

The growth mindset concepts that are featured on these posters include:
• Mindset is everything
• Everything is difficult before it is easy
• Mistakes are proof that you are trying
• Your potential is limitless
• You are capable of doing difficult things
• Don’t give up until you’re proud
The digital download includes high resolution PNG files that can be printed in sizes from 8×10 to 24×30 without compromising image quality. I recommend printing on bright white matte card stock or cover stock paper in the 80-110lb range. Or upload/bring your digital files to your favorite office supply store for printing.
